In an industry that already required 88,000 new recruits every year, Construction Sector Skills Council has warned that that it will be vital if the industry is to deliver on all demands.  The 33,500 predicted jobs include 24,000 trade and craft roles, with the London Olympics generating £2.5 billion in construction output over the next seven years.

Plasterer - Your opportunities are superb, with construction industry bodies forecasting the need for around 2,500 newly qualified plasterers in the next two years. Plasterers currently earn upwards of £180 per day. These figures do not include the huge amount of work that is in demand in domestic properties where plasterers charge their own rates.

Carpenter - The construction industry has the biggest demand and it anticipates a need for around 12,500 new recruits into the wood occupations each year between now and 2011.

Bricklayer - Your prospects as a qualified bricklayer are very good, due to the expansion of urban regeneration programmes, schools and hospitals building programmes and large development projects around the country. The construction industry estimates that it will need about 5,000 new bricklayers every year between now and 2011.

Kitchen & Bathroom Fitter - Assemble and install kitchens and bathroom suites in domestic and commercial premises. Fitting a bathroom would usually take around a day and a half and you would charge £450 to £500 (and that doesn’t include tiling the bathroom). Fitting a kitchen usually takes around 3 to 5 days to fit and you will be charging upwards of £600 for your services.

Tiler  - Ceramic tilers charge a basic rate of £150 per day, but this dramatically increases with factors such as the complexity of the job and type/size of the tiles. The job can range from tiling a kitchen or bathroom to fitting out a shop, hotel or restaurant. You can also carry out specialist work, for instance on swimming pools and mosaic walls found in landscape gardening.

Painter & Decorator - As a qualified craftsperson your opportunities are good, with the industry needing over 8,000 new painters and decorators over the next couple of years. Decorators with specialist skills can earn over £22,000
a year.

Roofer - Construction Skills forecasts a need for just under 4,000 new roofers over the next two years. Public and private construction projects are partly driving this demand, for example, major local authority housing programmes in the larger cities such as Cardiff, Swansea, Liverpool, Glasgow and Birmingham, but these figures do not include the huge amount of work needing to be carried out on existing properties.

Dry lining - Dry lining and fitting interiors is one of the fastest growing areas in construction, with industry bodies predicting a demand for around 4,000 qualified dry liners. Some dry liners are earning upwards of £30,000.
